What is a bedside cot?

A bedside crib, also referred as a bassinet, or co-sleeper is a crib for babies that is attached to your adult bed. This allows your child to sleep with you in peace. This is a form of safe co-sleeping that does not increase the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) like bedsharing, and can help you build a bond with your baby's new arrival.

The cots come with an end that can be lowered so that you can reach your baby easily in the nighttime to comfort them and feed them. This is particularly useful for mothers who are recovering from a c section. Many of them are portable or foldable, so you can take them on trips and use them as a temporary sleep option for babies who aren't ready to transition to a larger cot.

Choose a crib that has a mattress that is breathable, as well as a protective cover that will shield your baby from stains. You might also want to buy baby-safe accessories such as an infant blanket or a teether.

If you're looking for a long-term option, some cribs have conversion kits that allow you to transform them into a cot, or a toddler bed at the time of need. This is great for extending their life span and making the transition easier. Some have a removable section at the top that can be turned into the bassinet. Other models can be used with a standard adult bed or a high-rise bed. This is a great option for families who plan to travel frequently or change between bedrooms at night. Consider the dimensions of your bedroom to ensure that you fit in the crib comfortably. A lot of cribs have a riser that can be added to create an incline for babies who have reflux.

Anna found that the CoZee was a safe and comfy sleeping space for her infant. She loved the fact that it didn't roll like other models, meaning it didn't wake her in the night when she was trying to comfort her baby during feeds. She also appreciated that the sides of the chair was lowered so that she didn't have to reach over her partner to carry the child out to feed them at night.

The Maxi-Cosi Lora

The Iora is a bassinet for infants designed to help parents feel more connected to their baby as they sleep. It adjusts up and down and moves through three slide positions to fit next to the bed of the parent or in the corner of the room, so that baby is always close to the parent's side. The mesh siding allows air to flow through, and allows you to see your baby quickly. And you can stow more pajamas and other supplies in the large storage basket under.

As opposed to other bedside crib options Iora is a standout among other bedside cribs. Iora can be folded flat and comes with a carry-on bag which allows it to be taken anywhere. Our mom testers found it easy to move from room to room, and believed that it was a suitable size for a small bedside cot, and not too big or too small. The large storage basket is perfect to store extra bedding or nappies.

This is an excellent choice for parents looking to co-sleep but don't want to share their beds or whose partners may be suffering from mobility issues, such as back problems or arthritis. Our mums who tested it were thrilled to be able to easily access their baby in the Iora and that it included an optional reflux incline that helped reduce gas.

Our mothers appreciate that the mattress follows NICE guidelines. These include placing the infant in a Moses basket or crib on its own, without blankets, toys and pillows. The mattress is also a good firm and comfortable for the baby, and sheets are readily available. It isn't as light as the other cribs for bedside use, though, so if you want something lighter and easier to move around with, look at other options on our list.
